US Extradites Suspect in $36.9M Crypto Scam Laundering Case
Zheng Zhao, 44, was extradited from the Netherlands to the US, accused of laundering over $36.9M taken from 174 Americans via fake crypto trading sites.

The US has secured the extradition from the Netherlands of Zheng Zhao, a 44-year-old Chinese national accused of conspiracy to commit money laundering. Prosecutors say more than $36.9 million from at least 174 American victims moved through a crypto investment scam network. US authorities announced the case in late October 2026.
Details
According to Bitcoin.com News and Finchannel, Zhao was charged in August 2025 and now faces the case in the US District Court for the Central District of California. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted. Outlets disagree on the arraignment date (Oct. 23 or 24), so we leave it out.
Prosecutors allege the group contacted victims through social media and dating platforms and pushed them to invest on counterfeit crypto trading sites. Funds left US bank accounts for a single account at Deltec Bank in the Bahamas, were converted into USDT and sent to a wallet controlled from scam centers in Cambodia.
Eight co-conspirators have already pleaded guilty, including ShengSheng He (51 months in prison) and Jingliang Su (46 months). Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva said the US will pursue charged defendants anywhere in the world. The US Secret Service, Homeland Security Investigations, the DOJ's Office of International Affairs and Dutch authorities were involved.
What this means for the market
The case shows investigators following the money from victims through stablecoins to intermediaries abroad. For the market it is background rather than a driver, but such prosecutions add pressure on services and intermediary banks that handle scam proceeds. There is no verdict yet, and Zhao is presumed innocent until a court rules otherwise. For the live bitcoin price, see the daily brief.
