How to read it
Funding is a periodic payment between longs and shorts on perpetual futures. It anchors the futures price to spot: when futures trade above spot the rate is positive and longs pay shorts; below spot, shorts pay longs.
High positive funding means the market is crowded with leveraged longs; a sharp drop can then snowball through liquidations. Negative funding means crowded shorts — fuel for a short squeeze. Near zero means balance. We combine positioning data in the Squeeze risk indicator.
How it is calculated
Binance charges funding every 8 hours (00:00, 08:00 and 16:00 UTC). Annualized rate = 8-hour rate × 3 × 365. To compare exchanges, Hyperliquid (hourly payments) is converted to 8 hours. Data comes from exchange public APIs, refreshed every 15 minutes.
