Warren set to chair Senate Banking: what it means for crypto

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, one of crypto's harshest critics in Congress, is set to chair the US Senate Banking Committee after Democrats won the Senate in the November 3 midterms; the new Senate takes office in January. Bitcoin.com News and BeInCrypto reported it on November 6, citing the Wall Street Journal.

Details

The Banking Committee oversees the SEC and other financial regulators and handles crypto legislation. As chair, Warren would gain subpoena power over companies and witnesses; until now she could only send letters that recipients were not obliged to answer. According to the Wall Street Journal, early priorities include insider trading in prediction markets, consumer protection at crypto firms and alleged conflicts of interest involving Donald Trump and his family. Bitcoin.com adds that analysts at Stifel warned clients of possible "targeted investigations" into crypto firms.

Warren opposed the CLARITY Act, which failed a procedural Senate vote 49–50 in September; she said it "fails to adequately protect investors, our financial system and our national security" (quote via BeInCrypto). What this means for the market

These are expectations, not decisions: the new Senate formally organizes its committees in January, and no hearings or subpoenas have been announced. The main risk for the industry is headline risk: committee summons and investigations could pressure individual companies and tokens and slow Republican-backed bills.
