Mastercard Opens Early Access to AI Agent Payments
Mastercard opened early access to Agent Pay for Machines on the x402 protocol, settling via Base and BVNK after pilots with Coinbase and Cloudflare. Still a pilot.

Mastercard on October 20 opened early access to Agent Pay for Machines, a payments system that lets AI agents discover services, agree to terms and pay within spending limits set by a human, The Block and Decrypt reported. The product remains in pilot and is not yet commercially available.
Details
Early access follows pilots with Cloudflare, Ant International, BVNK, AIsa, Base and Coinbase. Developers get buyer- and seller-side APIs, a toolkit and a sandbox. The system is built on x402, a standard based on the HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status code that Coinbase incubated: when an agent receives that response, it generates a digitally signed payment voucher. It supports card, bank account and stablecoin payments, includes spending controls, and lets vouchers be batched and redeemed later.
Settlement runs through Coinbase, the Base network and BVNK, the stablecoin firm Mastercard acquired in August 2026, in fiat or stablecoins via Mastercard's Global Money Platform. In a demo at Cloudflare Connect, a marketing agent from the agency Hype ran a protein-bar campaign across nine payments to two merchants under a single approved budget, with no separate accounts or invoices.
Mastercard framed the goal this way, per The Block: the web let software communicate, APIs let software use services, and now AI agents need a way to pay for them.
What it means for the market
The crypto angle is the plumbing: agent payments lean on the open x402 protocol and stablecoin settlement on Base rather than card rails alone. It extends Mastercard's recent moves, including its BVNK-powered platform and the Stablecoin Security tool.
For now this is developer early access; the scale and commercial launch timing have not been disclosed. For the live market picture see the daily brief, and for USDC and Ethereum data see the coin pages.
