FINMA Approves Switzerland's First Retail Bitcoin ETF
Swiss regulator FINMA on Oct. 20 approved the first exchange-traded retail fund that invests directly in bitcoin under Swiss fund law. The issuer was not named.

Switzerland's financial regulator FINMA on Oct. 20, 2026 approved the country's first exchange-traded retail fund that invests directly in bitcoin. The regulator's statement does not name the fund or its issuer.
Details
Under Swiss law the product is classed as an "other fund for alternative investments" with a specific risk. FINMA granted an exemption from the usual risk-diversification rules, citing bitcoin's long trading history and particularly high trading volume compared with other cryptocurrencies. In 2021 the regulator had already authorised a fund for qualified investors holding a basket of cryptocurrencies.
On investor protection, supervised institutions must mitigate operational and custody risks under guidance published on Jan. 12, 2026, conduct rules at the point of sale under the Financial Services Act (FinSA) apply, and fund documents must spell out the risks. FINMA stresses that bitcoin investments, even through an approved ETF, stay highly risky because of volatility. It adds that other providers have also filed or announced applications for bitcoin ETFs, a point The Block also reports.
What it means for the market
Swiss retail investors gain a regulated way to get bitcoin exposure through an ordinary brokerage account, and the precedent could smooth approvals for other issuers' filings. The price impact is hard to judge: the fund's size and launch timing are unknown. For live market data see the daily briefing; US ETF flows are on the indicators page.
