Thai Police Arrest Chinese Man Tied to $75M Crypto Laundering Network
Thai police detained a 37-year-old Chinese national in Bangkok for running 133+ accounts used to launder 500 million yuan (~$75M) through crypto exchanges.

Thai Immigration Bureau Division 3 arrested a 37-year-old Chinese national known as Wu in Bangkok's Saphan Sung district on October 16, 2026. He is wanted by Chinese authorities for his alleged role in a transnational money laundering network that processed over 500 million yuan (approximately $75 million) across more than 133 bank accounts.
Details
According to Thai police, Wu allegedly facilitated cryptocurrency and foreign-currency exchanges for multiple criminal organisations and recruited money mules to open accounts on behalf of the network. To evade capture for nearly four years, he used forged residency documents and repeatedly changed his vehicle's licence plates. His Thai visa had been expired for more than three years at the time of his arrest. Wu was charged under Section 81 of Thailand's Immigration Act 1979 for overstaying and is expected to be deported to China following completion of Thai legal proceedings.
Nation Thailand citing police command noted Wu was staying in a luxury apartment in the Saphan Sung area. Crypto.news reports that he serviced accounts for several separate international criminal groups, including those linked to fraud and laundering operations across Southeast Asia.
What this means for the market
The arrest is a reminder that law enforcement cooperation on crypto-linked financial crime is intensifying in Southeast Asia. Thailand has increasingly coordinated with Chinese authorities on organized crime cases in the region. Dismantling even one node in such a network — despite years of evasion using forged documents — signals that international frameworks for tracking cryptocurrency transactions are becoming more effective.
