Quantinuum Cuts Quantum Logical Errors 10x in New Record

Quantinuum Cuts Quantum Logical Errors 10x in New Record

Quantinuum said on Oct. 19 it set a new quantum error-correction record: 99.9995% logical fidelity, or roughly five errors per million operations, on its Helios computer. According to the company's press release, that is 10x better than its own September 2026 result.

Details

The result uses a "color code" with adaptive syndrome extraction. Quantinuum says logical errors fell by a factor of 12 with each increase in code distance, and that the final rate is 100x lower than the best published result from Google Quantum AI's superconducting system. CEO Rajeeb Hazra said the result proves the company has the error-correction architecture and trapped-ion technology needed for universal fault tolerance. The company targets Apollo, a universal fault-tolerant computer, by 2029.

For bitcoin the link is indirect. As Bitcoin.com notes, elliptic-curve signatures are theoretically vulnerable to a sufficiently powerful quantum machine, and about 6.9M BTC sit at addresses with exposed public keys. That estimate comes from the outlet, not from Quantinuum.

What it means for the market

The record does not mean bitcoin can be broken: a fault-tolerant machine of the required scale is still far off, and Quantinuum is reporting logical-qubit results in a lab. Still, each such milestone feeds the debate over post-quantum upgrades, which the Quantum Alliance raised earlier this week. See the bitcoin page for more.
