OKX Brings Account Protection of Up to $500,000 to the US
OKX Shield in the US covers assets lost to account takeovers: up to $100,000 for all users, $250,000 for VIP 1–3 and $500,000 for VIP 4+, at no fee.

OKX has launched OKX Shield for US customers, a program that compensates users when a third party takes over an account and moves assets out. The Block reported on October 20 that there is no subscription or activation fee. Shield debuted in Europe in September 2026.
Details
According to OKX's guide, coverage depends on the customer tier: up to $100,000 for standard users, up to $250,000 for VIP 1–3 and up to $500,000 for VIP 4+. It covers account takeovers through phishing, malware or SIM swaps. Full terms and exclusions are set out in the Shield Terms and Conditions.
To be covered, users must pass an account-eligibility and device-health check, enable a passkey, large-withdrawal protection and web-withdrawal protection, and set up multi-factor authentication. The program stays active only while those safeguards are on. OKX's page lists an October 1 launch date, while The Block describes a US debut on October 20, so we don't state an exact date.
OKX board director Andrew Cuomo, the former New York governor, told reporters the logic is that OKX trusts its own system and is putting its money next to customers' money (a paraphrase of remarks relayed by The Block). Cuomo joined the board in July 2026 and co-chairs a joint venture between OKX and Intercontinental Exchange formed in June.
What it means for the market
Compensation for account takeovers is becoming a competitive feature for exchanges courting US users. Coverage is conditional: it lapses if the required security settings are switched off.
