Malaysia and Thailand Central Banks Join Singapore's BLOOM

The central banks of Malaysia (Bank Negara Malaysia) and Thailand (Bank of Thailand) have joined BLOOM, an initiative launched by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). MAS announced the expansion on October 23: the three regulators will work with industry on common approaches to cross-border settlement in digital money.

Details

According to the MAS release, BLOOM (Borderless, Liquid, Open, Online, Multi-currency) is a public-private effort. It aims to let different forms of digital money, including tokenized deposits and regulated stablecoins, be accepted, exchanged and settled across institutions, networks and jurisdictions.

Work is organized around three areas: acceptance and settlement across jurisdictions, interoperability between digital money arrangements, and programmable controls such as identity checks, sanctions screening and transaction controls. New industry participants include Airwallex, Mastercard, Maybank, Monee, Nium, Ripple, ShopeePay, Visa and the World Bank Group. Circle, Coinbase, DBS, J.P. Morgan, Standard Chartered and Stripe were already involved. The announcement gives no launch timeline. MAS Deputy Managing Director Leong Sing Chiong said the future of finance will involve multiple forms of digital money operating across different institutions and markets. ForkLog also covered the news.

What this means for the market

Three Southeast Asian central banks backing one framework shows regulators building cross-border settlement on regulated tokens rather than public cryptocurrencies. For stablecoins it signals institutional demand for interoperable standards, though no concrete launches or dates have been given. The announcement has no direct bearing on bitcoin; see the daily summary for the live price.
