Crypto Liquidations Hit $951M as Ether Sinks 6.5%

Crypto traders saw $951.4 million in leveraged positions forcibly closed over the 24 hours to Thursday morning, Oct. 15, with $876.3 million of that coming from longs, The Block reported, citing CoinGlass data. Ether took the hardest hit, falling 6.5% to $2,353. Bitcoin dipped to $80,226 on Binance around 10–11 PM ET on Wednesday, its lowest level since Sept. 20.

Details

The selloff began on Oct. 14 after hotter-than-expected US inflation, with the September CPI rising 3.7% year over year. Bitcoin had traded near $84,000 before the release, slid to around $81,700 afterward and broke below $81,000 overnight. Asian markets added to the pressure on Thursday morning: South Korea's Kospi plunged 8%, with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix each down more than 9%.

According to CoinDesk, also using CoinGlass figures, ether futures accounted for about $286 million in liquidations and bitcoin for about $197 million. Solana positions lost roughly $31 million, and Zcash — down about 13% on the day — saw nearly $19 million wiped out. XRP and SOL each fell around 5%.

Rate uncertainty is the main driver. Per CoinDesk, CME FedWatch odds of an October rate hike jumped from about 22% to nearly 47% after the CPI print before easing to 26%. Nasdaq futures were down about 1% early Thursday, extending Wednesday's 2% drop.

What it means for the market

Roughly 92% of the liquidations hit long positions, a sign the market was crowded on the bullish side and that a 3–6% drop was enough to trigger a cascade. Flushes like this often ease some selling pressure, but the next move will hinge on Fed rate expectations and whether Asian equities stabilize. For how liquidations work, see our explainer.
